How Chiropractic Care Helps with Vertigo

Vertigo is a very common issue that is estimated to affect around 40% of adults in the United States at some point during their lifetime. Vertigo is a symptom of a condition, rather than an actual condition itself. The symptoms can vary significantly, and for some people, can be extremely debilitating, affecting their ability to work and their quality of life. Fortunately, chiropractic care is one of the most effective ways of relieving these symptoms and helping patients to reclaim their life.

Causes of Vertigo

There are a number of conditions that can cause the symptoms of vertigo. In most cases, the patient experiences some degree of imbalance in their ear or a problem with their central nervous system. This is the system that controls all movement and feeling in the body. Some of the most common causes of vertigo include:

  • Labyrinthitis: a problem characterized by inflammation of the inner ear that puts pressure on the vestibulocochlear nerve.

  • Cholesteatoma: a non-cancerous growth develops in the ear, normally as a result of repeated infections.

  • Binocular Vision Dysfunction: a condition caused by misalignment of the eyes.

  • Migraines

  • Head injuries

Symptoms of Vertigo

The most common symptom of vertigo is feeling as though the space around you is moving or spinning. However, there is also a range of other effects that people with vertigo may experience. These include:

  • Difficulties with balance

  • Lightheadedness

  • A sense of motion sickness

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Ringing in the ear, a condition called tinnitus

  • Feeling as though your ears are full or under pressure

  • Headaches

Symptoms can come and go or be fairly persistent. They can also vary in severity.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help With Vertigo?

Chiropractic care has been proven to be very effective in helping to reduce vertigo in several ways. Firstly, it can help to eliminate problems affecting the inner ear that could be contributing to vertigo. The inner ear is connected via nerves to the upper cervical vertebrae – the bones of the neck. When these vertebrae are misaligned, the inner ear can’t function properly, making things like draining fluid impossible. When a chiropractor adjusts the cervical spine to bring it into better alignment, proper fluid drainage can occur, reducing the symptoms of vertigo and preventing future episodes.

Secondly, chiropractic care looks at the overall positioning of the spine. The spine houses a key element of the central nervous system – the spinal cord. As we know, issues affecting the central nervous system can contribute to vertigo. For example, pinched nerves can cause false messages to the brain, interrupting what we see and feel, and this could include inciting the effects of vertigo.
